The Skype for Mac Guide – 2014

We absolutely love Skype for Mac here at Lure of Mac! Skype was the first cool program to bring free video calling to computers, Macs, and laptops. In today’s article we’re going to give you a short Skype for Mac guide that will teach you what you need to know about Skype for Macs.

Skype for Mac has a fresh new feel and look and it does all that you know Skype for Mac does and a bit more! Chat with your friends in another country, read your nephew a book or show your best friend the new outfit you just bought. Skype is there for you and it’s free. You can also share files and photos for free in under a second and a group video calls are also free. You can switch between calling and video with a simple click or you can do both, if you please. With Skype you can make low-cost calls to mobile phones and landlines.

The minimum requirements for Skype for Mac are: 1GHz Intel processor, 100 MB of free disk space, an USB microphone or a regular headset if your Mac doesn’t have one. If you’re using an external webcam, you will need to download drivers. Your internet connection also needs to be at least 100 kpbs download and 100 kpbs upload.

Skype updates automatically, so don’t worry about your Skype version becoming obsolete. While Skype doesn’t support call recording, you can download an alternative recorder that will work just fine with Skype.

You can even make Skype for Mac even more fun than it already is with a fun add-on, such as Clownfish. Skype Clownfish for Mac is an online translator for all your messages; you can write in your native language and the person you’re writing to receives the translated version. It has text-to-speech support for incoming messages and there is built-in spell check support, a built-in list of greeting wishes and lots of fun effects. Clownfish also has an artificial intelligence root that can replace you in conversation and a voice changer feature that is both fun and useful!

I’m afraid that if you have the old Mac OS X Tiger, the 10.4.11 update, the newest and latest version of Skype will not be working on your Mac and you will need to upgrade your OSX. The new Mac OS X Yosemite, the 10.6.8 version works splendidly with the new Skype, as does with Mac OX X Leopard; Skype for Mac 10.5.8 is a perfect match!

Older downloads of Skype, such as the 2.8, are still available online, but the performance is weak. Plus, there is no support, help or assistance for those older versions. We understand that not everybody can upgrade their Macs every couple of years and that is why we recommend you download an older version of Skype for Mac and know that you might run into some issues along the way. Don’t worry, it’s not something that will prevent you from communicating properly.

Downloading Skype is very easy! Just go to www.Skype.com, head over to the download page, download Skype for Mac for free and install the program! Go to the App Store if you want Skype for iPad or for your phone.
